The Middle English period (1100–1500) marks a crucial stage in the historical development of English morphology. During this time, the language moved away from the complex inflectional system of Old English and gradually adopted a more analytic structure. The influence of French after the Norman Conquest encouraged the reduction of many traditional endings and introduced clearer grammatical patterns.
