ANALYSIS OF THE ORIENTAL WOMAN IN AMIN MAALOUF'S NOVEL “SAMARKAND”: TENSIONS BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM AND SOCIAL CONSTRAINTS

In this article, the author analyzes the representation of the oriental woman from the psychological and cultural side as well as the importance of women in the perpetuation of traditions and cultural values ​​in Amin Maalouf’s novel “Samarkand.” He wants to show how everyday actions are influenced by ancient beliefs. The woman embodies the tension between social constraint and inner freedom. Through her, Maalouf depicts the oriental woman not as a passive victim, but as a resilient and subversive figure, capable of transcending the limits imposed by tiny but meaningful gestures. The veil, the metal and the gaze become ambivalent symbols, reflecting both oppression and resistance. This representation invites us to reconsider the role of women in traditional societies, not as submissive objects, but as silent actors of their emancipation. She combines intelligence, audacity and pragmatism to navigate a patriarchal world without being crushed by it. Far from being a victim, she uses her charm, wit, and her words to assert her place, while criticizing the structures that seek to diminish it. Her character explores the tensions between individual freedom and social constraints, offering a nuanced vision of the Eastern woman, both active and resilient.
