      "abstract": "This article examines the life and scholarly legacy of Ab\u016b Bakr Mu\u1e25ammad ibn 'Al\u012b ibn Ism\u0101'\u012bl al-Qaff\u0101l al-Sh\u0101sh\u012b (291/904\u2013365/976), one of the most prominent Sh\u0101fi'\u012b jurists of the mediaeval Islamic world. Based on a comparative analysis of over twenty mediaeval biographical, historiographical, and geographical sources, the study reconstructs al-Qaff\u0101l al-Sh\u0101sh\u012b's biography, traces his intellectual journey from his native city Sh\u0101sh through the learning centres of Khur\u0101s\u0101n, Iraq, Sh\u0101m, and the \u1e24ij\u0101z, and evaluates the scholarly debates surrounding his life. The article argues that a careful reading of the sources allows certain conclusions to be drawn with confidence, while other questions must remain open. Beyond its biographical contribution, the study situates al-Qaff\u0101l al-Sh\u0101sh\u012b within the broader intellectual history of Transoxiana under the Samanids and considers his role in the consolidation of the Sh\u0101fi'\u012b school in the eastern Islamic world.",
