Accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, digital learning platforms have become an integral part of the learning process, which this study explores via the mechanisms by which these platforms engage learners and support self-directed study. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach-a combination of observational data and the analysis of literature-this study evaluates four widely-used platforms: Duolingo, Quizlet, BBC Learning English, and Moodle. Gamification elements and flexible scheduling have indeed improved engagement and perceived autonomy; however, concerns arise over superficial learning patterns and reduced critical thinking.
