TI  - GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS: CURRENT CHALLENGES AND MODERN INSIGHTS
N2  - A review of the world literature has shown that gestational diabetes mellitus (GSD) is the most common extragenital pathology of gestation and poses a serious medical and social problem, increasing the frequency of undesirable pregnancy outcomes for both mother and fetus. A significant variability of opinions on the frequency of GSD, its etiology and pathogenesis, screening methods and diagnosis of carbohydrate metabolism disorders during pregnancy has been revealed. Taking into account the diverse scientific data, constantly changing bioecological environmental conditions that dramatically affect the development of pregnancy, it can be noted the need for early detection of GSD, in order to adequately correct glycemia to prevent adverse pregnancy and childbirth. The lack of universal diagnostic criteria, on the one hand, and the clinical course of GSD without obvious manifestation, on the other, subsequently increase the risk of diabetes mellitus, obesity, carbohydrate metabolism disorders and cardiovascular complications in both mother and child. Therefore, this pathology requires the development of uniform standards for the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of carbohydrate metabolism during pregnancy.
