abstract: This article explores the intricate relationship between depression and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), examining how psychological distress, particularly major depressive disorder (MDD), contributes to the onset, progression, and prognosis of various heart-related conditions. It reviews the biological, behavioral, and social pathways through which depression exerts its influence, including dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, increased inflammatory markers, poor health behaviors, and medication non-adherence. The growing body of evidence underscores the importance of integrating mental health care into cardiovascular disease prevention and management strategies.
