In the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, the immunological conflict between the mother and the fetus plays a leading role. This is characterized by the entry of fetal (primarily paternal) antigens into the maternal bloodstream and the subsequent formation of antigen–antibody complexes. In normal pregnancy, mechanisms of immune tolerance—particularly those mediated by the T-suppressor system—help to eliminate this conflict.
