ENHANCING ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE THROUGH ESP INSTRUCTION IN HIGHER EDUCATION

The rapid globalization of labor markets and the increased use of English as the primary language of academic and professional communication have intensified the importance of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) within higher education. ESP is designed to address discipline-specific language needs and equip students with the linguistic, rhetorical, and communicative skills required for academic success and future employment. This study investigates the role of ESP instruction in enhancing both academic and professional competence among undergraduate learners from various disciplines. Drawing on established ESP principles, including needs analysis, disciplinary discourse, and task-based learning, the research implements a 10-week ESP program and evaluates its effects through quantitative and qualitative measures. Findings reveal significant improvement in students' academic reading, writing, and oral communication, as well as increased confidence and autonomy in professional contexts. The results support the views of leading ESP scholars, such as Hutchinson and Waters’ (1987) assertion that “ESP is an approach to language teaching in which all decisions as to content and method are based on the learner’s reason for learning” , emphasizing its crucial role in higher education.
