METAPHORS OF TIME IN VIRGINIA WOOLF’S TO THE LIGHTHOUSE

This article investigates the metaphors of time in Virginia Woolf’s modernist novel To the Lighthouse, focusing on how Woolf transforms time from a linear chronological phenomenon into a subjective, psychological, and symbolic dimension. Drawing on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) and stylistic analysis, the study explores three dominant metaphorical models: time as space, time as movement, and time as a destructive-natural force. Using close textual analysis, the research identifies how Woolf employs imagery, inner monologues, rhythmic syntax, and shifting perspectives to represent temporality as fluid, elastic, and emotionally charged. The findings reveal that Woolf’s metaphors not only reflect modernist aesthetics but also reshape the reader’s perception of memory, loss, and human consciousness. This study contributes to modernist literary scholarship by offering a detailed linguo-stylistic examination of how metaphor serves as a narrative mechanism for constructing psychological time.
